New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters said that his country was reimposing sanctions on Tehran due to mounting concerns over Iran’s non-compliance with its nuclear obligations, according to Reuters.
The sanctions feature a vast array of restrictions such as an asset freeze and travel bans for sanctioned persons along with import and export bans on specific nuclear and military goods.
“This reimposition of UN-mandated sanctions reflects the international community’s deep concerns about Iran’s non-compliance with its nuclear obligations and unjustifiable levels of uranium enrichment activity,” Peters said.
They also include that New Zealanders have a responsibility to remain vigilant in their dealings with Iran.
“New Zealand has consistently supported diplomatic efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons from any source. We strongly encourage Iran to re-engage in negotiations and resume full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency,” he added.
Peters also noted that New Zealand will announce a mandatory registration system for citizens seeking business with Iran, set to take effect on February 1, 2026.
