Indonesia Trains 20,000 Troops for Health, Infrastructure Tasks in Gaza Peacekeeping Mission

As part of a planned peacekeeping operation in Gaza after the two-year war with Israel, Indonesia has trained up to 20,000 troops to undertake health and construction tasks, according to Reuters.

The United States has recently discussed arrangements and plans for a multinational stabilization force in Gaza with several countries including Indonesia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, and Qatar.

The US has also prepared a draft stipulating that such a force would be authorized to “use all necessary measures” to demilitarize Gaza, secure its borders, protect civilians and aid delivery, and support a newly trained Palestinian police force.

Meanwhile, Indonesia announced that it has not received any timeline or mandate regarding the deployment of its troops in the Palestinian enclave.

“We’ve prepared a maximum of 20,000 troops, but the specifications will revolve around health and construction,” Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said.

The absence of these details further increases the uncertainty that still surrounds efforts to establish an international presence in Gaza.

“We are waiting for further decisions on Gaza peace action,” Sjamsoeddin added.

In September, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto told the United Nations General Assembly that his country was ready to deploy 20,000 or more troops in Gaza to help secure peace if there was a resolution from the UN.

Notably, Indonesia has slightly softened its stance towards Israel under the government of President Prabowo Subianto.

Prabowo said that the international community should recognize an independent Palestine, but also guarantee the safety and security of Israel, during the UN General Assembly in September.
