US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his optimism on Wednesday that the UN Security Council would soon finalize a key resolution on Gaza, which endorses the necessary establishment of an international security force to maintain order following a proposed ceasefire.
Consequently, Rubio confidently told reporters, “We feel optimistic that it’s going to happen,” following a crucial meeting of G7 foreign ministers held in Canada. Furthermore, the Secretary confirmed, “I think we’re making good progress on the language of the resolution and hopefully we’ll have action on it very soon.”
Diplomacy and Ceasefire Follow-Up
Specifically, the US is actively engaging numerous nations to skillfully “balance their interests here, and how that’s structured beyond just the security force,” Rubio explained to the press. Last week, Washington formally began circulating the critical draft resolution, which directly follows up on the comprehensive ceasefire initiative championed by President Donald Trump.
Although the Trump administration has long criticized the United Nations, several allied countries mandate Security Council authorization before they can deploy any troops to the volatile Gaza region. Rubio stressed that deploying this international force remains crucial for two major reasons. Primarily, the force must deliver vital humanitarian assistance into the Palestinian territory and simultaneously effectively sideline Hamas. He insisted that establishing this security creates necessary conditions for long-term stability.
“If you really want to see a huge uptick, not just in humanitarian assistance, but redevelopment, you’re going to need to have security,” Rubio finalized.
