Explosion Damages Belgian Synagogue, No Injuries Reported

An overnight explosion between Sunday and Monday hit a synagogue in the eastern Belgian city of Liege, with the police reporting no injuries, according to AFP.

The authorities are currently investigating the cause of the blast that caused “only material damage.”

Belgium’s Federal Prosecutors, responsible for handling organized crime and terrorism cases, also said they will investigate the blast that damaged a synagogue on Monday in eastern Belgium, as the local mayor condemned the incident as a targeted “antisemitic act.”

“This is all intentional and targeted. We condemn this antisemitic act as strongly as possible,” Willy Demeyer, the mayor of Liege, said.

The blast occurred around 4:00 a.m. (0300 GMT) in front of the synagogue, blowing out the windows of buildings across the street, according to Asharq Al-Awsat.

“We cannot allow foreign conflicts to be imported into our city,” Demeyer added.

This incident followed a similar explosion that occurred at the US Embassy in Oslo on Sunday, causing no casualties.

These incidents came at a crucial time as the United States and Israel are targeting Iranian leaders and facilities, triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Since the beginning of the joint US-Israel attacks on Iran on February 28, US embassies across the Middle East have been placed on heightened alert. Moreover, Iran has targeted several diplomatic missions as part of its retaliatory strikes that targeted industrial and diplomatic sites.

However, Norwegian police said there was no immediate indication that the explosion near the US embassy in Oslo was linked to the current Mideast conflict.
