Putin Pledges ‘Unwavering Support’ to Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday reaffirmed Russia’s “unwavering support” for Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed the position after his father was killed during the joint US-Israeli strikes, according to Al-Arabiya.
“I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,” Putin said in a message to Khamenei.
In this regard, he further noted that Russia has been and will remain a “reliable partner” to Iran.
The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.
Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.
One of the US-Israel strikes had killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His killing has raised critical questions concerning Iran’s future.
Mojtaba was selected by Iran’s Assembly of Experts to succeed his late father as supreme leader.
This move is widely seen as a sign that hardliners are still dominating the country’s power structure.
“At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication,” Putin said.
