Earthquake Rocks Southern Japan; Emergency Warning for Miyazaki and Kagoshima
A powerful earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.2 struck parts of the Kyushu region in southern Japan on Monday, prompting an emergency warning for the prefectures of Miyazaki and Kagoshima.
The earthquake, which occurred at approximately 10:25 a.m. local time, originated at a depth of around 40 kilometers off the eastern coast of the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
Although no tsunami warning was issued, the tremor registered up to a lower 5 on the country’s seismic intensity scale, making it the fifth-highest level.
The city of Nichinan in Miyazaki Prefecture experienced the strongest impact, with the earthquake reaching a lower 5 on the seismic intensity scale.
Residents reported significant shaking and structural rattling, causing alarm among the local population.
Local authorities are currently assessing the situation and ensuring the safety of residents. No immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been received.
The Kyushu region is known for its seismic activity, as it lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to tectonic plate movements.
Reuters will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
