Wadi Arar is a major valley in northern Saudi Arabia, stretching over 190 kilometers. It starts at Sahl Omar near Harrah Al-Harrah. It passes through Al-Shuwaikhtiya, and then Al-Mutadil, continues through the city of Ar’ar, and extends into Iraqi territory.

The city of Arar is located on this valley, from which its name was taken. The people and visitors to the region are keen to spend enjoyable times on its banks and enjoy its picturesque nature.
The President of the Aman Environmental Association in the Northern Borders, Nasser Al-Majlad, explained that this valley was once abundant with dense vegetation, including Arabian bitter almond (Luwiza), Ziziphus, Acacia, Sidr, Rhazya, Artemisia, Cistus, thyme, and others. It was also rich in wildlife, including Arabian oryx, ibex, gazelles, ostriches, wild asses, and many species of birds.

The Wadi Arar has been mentioned by several poets from ancient times, including Imru’ al-Qais. Additionally, historians note that the Northern Borders region was formerly called ‘Al-Owda’ due to the abundance of valleys in the area. Many Arab poets from the pre-Islamic era lived in these valleys, such as Al-Nabigha, Al-Hutay’a, Al-Akhtal, Zuhayr bin Janab Al-Kalbi, and others.

On the other hand, a recent plan for the developmental and environmental rehabilitation of Wadi Ar’ar has been adopted. This plan aims to protect the valley’s components from pollution and restore its biodiversity. It targets achieving environmental sustainability by reducing pollution, combating desertification through the development of vegetation cover, and optimizing the use of treated water resources.
