Cyberattack Hits Major European Airports, Causes Disruption

A cyberattack has caused disruption across several major European airports, including London’s Heathrow, Brussels and Berlin, reported Reuters.

On Friday night, a cyberattack hit Collins Aerospace – a service provider for check-in and boarding systems for several airlines across multiple airports worldwide – causing operation disruption that led to delaying and cancelling flights on Saturday.

London’s Heathrow Airport warned of possible flight delays for departing passengers due to a “technical issue.”

Meanwhile, Brussels Airport announced that the attack took the automated systems out of service, with only manual check-in and boarding procedures available.

“This has a large impact on the flight schedule and will unfortunately cause delays and cancellations of flights…The service provider is actively working on the issue and trying to resolve the problem as quickly as possible,” Brussels Airport said in a statement.

The airport confirmed the cancellation of 10 flights and delays of more than an hour for 17 others, according to Sky News.

Similarly, Berlin Airport warned of delays. “Due to a technical issue at a system provider operating across Europe, there are longer waiting times at check-in. We are working on a quick solution,” it stated on its website.

The impacted airports advised passengers with flights on Saturday to check with airlines for flight confirmation before heading to the airport.

According to Reuters, operations at Germany’s Frankfurt Airport and Zurich Airport had not been affected by the disruption.
