Saudi Arabia has become a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors for the next term, running until 2027, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
During the plenary session of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna on Friday, the agency elected Saudi Arabia to serve on its 35-member Board of Governors.
The IAEA Board of Governors is a key decision-making body responsible for reviewing critical issues, such as the agency’s safeguards. This includes verifying that the Non-Proliferation Treaty States Parties are committed to peaceful nuclear activities.
Moreover, the Board’s roles include reviewing the IAEA’s financial statements, program, and budget, as well as making recommendations to the General Conference.

Saudi Arabia previously served on the IAEA‘s Board of Governors from 2022 to 2024. The re-election of the Kingdom to the Board underscores the international community’s trust in Saudi Arabia’s active and constructive role.
It also stresses its ongoing efforts to promote international cooperation aimed at utilizing atomic energy to foster global development and peace.
In addition to Saudi Arabia, the General Conference elected Belgium, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania, Niger, Peru, the Philippines, Portugal, Romania, and Togo to its Board of Governors. The Board will meet on September 22, 2025 to elect its officers.
