Biden, Iraqi PM Agree to US-led Coalition Withdrawal Talks-Al Sharq Alawsat

The future of the American presence in Iraq was one of the important topics that Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani carried with him during his visit to Washington and his talks with President Joe Biden at the White House, yesterday (Monday), according to Al sharq Alawsat.

Iraqi PM said during his meeting with Biden: “We are working to move from the military relationship to a full partnership with Washington,” referring to what Baghdad desires regarding the future presence of American forces in Iraq after the end of the war against ISIS.

The Iraqi PM added that US-Iraqi relations are at an important turning point, acknowledging that the views between the two sides may differ regarding what is happening in the region.

As for Biden, he stressed Washington’s commitment to Israel’s security, in light of the widespread Iranian attack with missiles and drones, on Saturday night. He said that Iraq and the United States are working together to defeat ISIS, stressing that “we are committed to protecting the interests of America and its partners in the region, including Iraq.”

In addition to common political and security issues, Al-Sudani discussed important files related to economic, trade, and energy issues.

In turn, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Muhammad Ali Tamim, who chaired the meeting of the US-Iraqi Supreme Coordination Committee with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, said yesterday that Iraq calls on all parties to exercise restraint amid escalating tension in the region.
