Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is to visit Riyadh on Wednesday. This visit is part of his regional tour aimed at preventing a major military escalation. He will meet with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah to discuss regional issues.
Focus on Gaza and Lebanon Conflicts
Iran’s ISNA news agency reported that Araqchi’s tour focuses on ending “Israeli crimes” in Gaza and Lebanon. Political Science Professor Dr. Saleh al-Khathlan noted that the visit aims to avert further regional conflict. He emphasized Saudi Arabia’s efforts to work with global partners to prevent a dangerous military confrontation.
Iran’s Diplomatic Strategy
Dr. al-Khathlan stated, “Iran is in a difficult position and needs countries like Saudi Arabia to help resolve its crisis.” Tasnim news agency quoted Araqchi, mentioning consultations in New York, Doha, Beirut, and Damascus. He highlighted the urgency of his visit to Saudi Arabia to seek measures against these “crimes.”
Call for Truce and Preparedness
Araqchi reiterated Iran’s stance against war but stated they are ready for any scenario. He emphasized their policy of ending conflicts and reaching a truce. “We are prepared for any scenario, and all necessary targets have been decided,” he declared.
Concerns Over Escalation
Dr. al-Khathlan pointed out that Araqchi’s visit follows recent escalations and Israel’s potential response to Iran’s missile strikes. He noted that Iran’s focus will be on averting further conflicts with Saudi assistance. Tehran recognizes Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role, given its ties with international players, in maintaining regional stability.
Dr. al-Khathlan added that the success of these diplomatic efforts depends on the Israeli government and its U.S. ally. With the U.S. preoccupied with elections, any uncalculated action might impact Kamala Harris’s chances in the presidential race.
