Mohammed Al-Jaber, the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, discussed the latest developments in the Yemeni crisis with Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, during a meeting in Riyadh on Thursday.
The role of Saudi Arabia in supporting efforts for calm and peace in Yemen was reviewed, as well as its support for the envoy’s efforts to reach a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis.
Grunberg’s office stated in a tweet on the “X” platform that the talks held by the envoy with the Saudi ambassador to Yemen focused on efforts to de-escalate tensions in Yemen amid regional tensions.
In a related context, the ambassadors of the five permanent member states of the Security Council met. Grundberg’s office stated that he emphasized the urgent need for a unified approach to support efforts towards a political process and a ceasefire in Yemen. He also stressed the importance of continuing to call for the release of detained UN employees.
A week prior to arriving in Riyadh, the UN envoy to Yemen addressed the Security Council in mid-August, emphasizing the importance of unifying the Yemeni currency and resolving the banking division. He also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s efforts in mitigating the recent economic tensions between the Yemeni government and the Houthis.
He also pointed out the de-escalation of economic tensions between the Yemeni government and the Houthis, stating: “Last month, with the support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the two parties were able to halt a dangerous cycle of escalation that was negatively impacting the banking and transportation sectors in Yemen and threatening to ignite a new military conflict.”
