ACWA Power and Uzbekistan’s National Electric Grid has signed an agreement for Central Asia’s biggest wind farm, the Aral Independent Wind Power Project. Developed by ACWA Power, it’ll have a 5 GW capacity in Karakalpakstan.
The agreement was signed during the inauguration ceremony of two projects by ACWA Power in Uzbekistan at the Tashkent International Investment Forum.
Moreover, these projects include the Syrdarya combined gas cycle power plant, with a capacity of 1.5 GW. It also contains the Riverside solar power plant with a capacity of 100 MW in the Tashkent region.
ACWA Power’s Renewable Energy in Uzbekistan
The Aral Independent Wind Energy Project is the 15th project within ACWA Power’s portfolio that it manages in Uzbekistan. It reinforces the company’s strong commitment to providing the renewable energy necessary to achieve the ambitious goals of the Uzbek government’s long-term strategy- provide 40% of its energy mix from energy sources.
Furthermore, renewable energy by 2030. Uzbekistan is the second largest country in ACWA Power’s investment portfolio outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With this latest project, its total investments in the country reach $13.9 billion.
Mr. Muhammad Abunayan, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACWA Power, said, “This project will provide clean energy to around 4.5 million homes in Uzbekistan, which leads the energy transition in Central Asia with its ambitious leadership.”

The Aral project will be developed in five phases, and will generate about 18,500 gigawatt hours of clean energy annually, eliminating 247,000 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, and providing energy to about four million homes. This represents an important step in Uzbekistan’s pursuit of achieving a clean energy transition strategy. In addition, the project will create hundreds of direct and indirect job opportunities.
It’s worth noting that ACWA Power’s portfolio in Uzbekistan comprises 11.6 gigawatts of energy, with 10.1 gigawatts being renewable energy. They’re also developing Uzbekistan’s first green hydrogen project, capable of producing 3,000 tons annually. The first phase was in November 2023.
