ACWA Power Announces First Phase of Green Hydrogen Project in Uzbekistan

ACWA Power has announced the first phase of its green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan.

In May 2023, ACWA Power signed agreements to purchase hydrogen and electricity during phase 1 with a view to produce 3,000 tons of green ammonia.

In the presence of  Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, ACWA Power announced the start of the first phase of the green hydrogen project  in the Republic of Uzbekistan. It will have a production capacity of up to 3,000 tons annually.

ACWA Power is the leader in energy transformation and the largest private company in the field of water desalination in the world.

The foundation stone laying ceremony for the first phase of the project took place, with the participation of  Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and His Excellency Eng. Khalid  Al-Falih, Saudi Minister of Investment.

Moreover, commenting on this, Mohammad Abunayyan, founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACWA Power, said: “We are pleased to renew the confidence of the leadership of the Republic of Uzbekistan in our company and its vast capabilities and potential, to develop the first green hydrogen production project in this country. This project is an outstanding achievement in Uzbekistan’s ambitious march towards achieving transformation in the energy sector.”

Green hydrogen Project’s Phases

This project consists of two phases. The first phase includes a pilot project to produce 3,000 tons of green ammonia annually.

Upon completion of the project’s second phase; 500,000 tons of green ammonia will be produced annually through a 2.4 GW wind power plant.

Moreover, this project is the second in the field of green hydrogen that ACWA Power is developing. The first is the NEOM green hydrogen plant project. It is also a joint venture between ACWA Power, NEOM, and Air Products.

ACWA Power owns a portfolio of 12 projects in the Republic of Uzbekistan. 11 of these projects are based entirely on renewable energy. Thus, Uzbekistan is the company’s second largest destination in terms of value after its local market in KSA.
