7.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines; Tsunami Warnings Issued

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck today off the coast of Davao Oriental, located in the Mindanao archipelago — the second-largest island in the Philippines. Authorities warned of potentially dangerous tsunami waves along coastal areas extending up to 300 kilometers from the epicenter.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake’s epicenter was located about 33 kilometers southeast of the city of Baganga at 01:43 GMT, at a depth of 23 kilometers.

Philippine authorities have cautioned about possible aftershocks and damage, though no immediate reports of casualties or property damage have been received.

Tsunami warnings were also extended to parts of Indonesia and Palau.
