Zelensky Pledges Fighting on as Ukraine Celebrates Independence Day

He stated, “We need a just peace, where our future will be decided only by us.” Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine will resist Russian aggression until genuine calls for peace emerge.

Zelensky’s address followed reports of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian energy facilities as Moscow claimed these attacks caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in Kursk. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished quickly, and radiation levels remained normal, according to the plant’s press service. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) acknowledged the incident and reiterated the need for protection around nuclear facilities.

Ongoing Conflict and Diplomatic Efforts

On the battlefield, Russia claimed to have seized two villages in the Donetsk region, controlling about 20% of Ukraine’s territory. The conflict, which escalated with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, continues to draw intense diplomatic efforts.

US President Donald Trump recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing potential peace talks. However, Trump expressed frustration over the lack of progress, considering further economic sanctions against Russia.

Zelensky has consistently called for an unconditional ceasefire, urging European allies to support a halt in hostilities. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Putin is willing to meet Zelensky when a suitable agenda is prepared, accusing Zelensky of rejecting proposals.
