The Saudi non-profit sector experienced a significant surge in 2023. Revenue reached a remarkable SAR54.4 billion ($14.5 billion), reflecting a substantial 33% increase compared to the previous year. This growth underscores the increasing role of philanthropy in the Kingdom.
According to General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT), health-related activities recorded the highest growth, contributing 70% of the sector’s revenue and showing remarkable expansion over last year. Education and research activities followed with a 53% increase, while volunteer brokerage and promotion activities rose by 36%. These sectors played vital roles in driving total revenue.
Expenditures Reflect Similar Trends
Total expenditures in the non-profit sector reached SAR 47 billion in 2023, showcasing substantial investments across various activities. Health-related activities led expenditures, showing a 74% increase, followed by education and research activities, which rose by 55%. Environmental activities contributed with a 34% increase, highlighting their growing importance within the sector.
Workforce Contributions Highlight Cultural Growth
Cultural and entertainment activities accounted for 27.6% of employed individuals, reflecting a strong focus on these areas within the sector. Social services activities contributed 27.2%, while development and housing activities added 12.4%. Health activities and education and research followed, contributing 11.5% and 7.5% respectively, with the remaining activities making up 13.8%.
These figures underline Saudi Arabia’s commitment to expanding its non-profit sector and diversifying its economic and social contributions.
