Royal Commission for AlUla Signs Partnership With Space for Giants
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has announced a significant partnership with the environmental conservation organization Space for Giants.
This collaboration aims to unify efforts to protect biodiversity in AlUla’s . It also focuses on reducing carbon emissions, and increasing carbon storage capabilities in AlUla natural reserves.
Strategic Goals and Global Standards
The partnership, spanning the next three years, intends for the two parties to jointly design and implement activities for managing and protecting biodiversity. These efforts will be done in line with international standards and the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative and Vision 2030.
Empowering Nature Protectors in ALUla
A key aspect of this partnership is equipping nature guardians in AlUla’s reserves with essential tools, systems, and resources. This ensures community protection and the health and safety of the guards.
Additionally, the partnership seeks to enhance communication methods among nature protectors, improving their conservation capabilities and enabling rapid data sharing.
Achieving Green List Certification
The collaboration also includes developing management systems for the reserves, aiming to meet the requirements of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Green List by 2025.
It further aims to lower carbon emissions and increase carbon storage in the reserves. The partners are committed to promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism models in AlUla.
Developing Natural Reserves in ALULa
The RCU is actively developing several natural reserves in AlUla, including Sharaan, AlGharamil, Wadi Nakheel, Harat AlZabn, and Harat Owairid. Each reserve boasts unique flora, fauna, and geological features.
The reserves cover over 12,000 square kilometers, more than 50% of AlUla’s land area. 154 nature guards who have completed an 18-month training program patroll these reserves.
