Washington unveiled on Friday its approval of a $1.98 billion arms package for Kuwait, following Iranian attacks on the Gulf nation during the recent conflict in the Middle East, according to Gulf News.
The US State Department said in a statement that it had authorized Kuwait’s acquisition of counter-drone systems from defense contractor Anduril, a company established by a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump.
The statement added that the sale would bolster US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the defense capabilities of Kuwait, a major non-NATO ally that has been a key contributor to political stability and economic development in the Middle East.
Kuwaiti authorities earlier this week denounced Iranian aggression following a drone attack on its international airport that killed one person and wounded 63 others.
In response, Tehran rejected accusations of responsibility, arguing that the incident was caused by a malfunction in a US Patriot missile defense system and not from an Iranian strike.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.
Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.
The conflict has spread across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead, triggering unprecedented disruptions to energy supplies especially after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
