Iran’s State media announced on Saturday that the funeral for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will kick off in Tehran on July 4, with the final burial to take place in his hometown of Mashhad, in northeastern Iran, on July 9, according to Al Arabiya English.
Khamenei was killed on February 28, the first day of Israeli and US airstrikes against Iran. The 86-year-old cleric had led the Islamic Republic for 36 years.
Media reports revealed that the funeral arrangements will feature ceremonies scheduled for July 7 in Qom, the holy city south of Tehran.
War in Iran
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.
Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.
The conflict has spread across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead and triggering unprecedented disruptions to energy supplies especially after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The adversaries remain locked in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran tightens its control over maritime traffic while the United States continues to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports.
The report also said the airstrike that killed him struck his central Tehran compound. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, who was wounded in the same strike and lost his wife, succeeded him as Supreme Leader.
Since his appointment, the new Supreme Leader has been seen only issuing written statements, with no public appearances.
Officials affirmed that his injuries were not series and would not cause facial disfigurement, disability, or the loss of a limb.
