The Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line began operating its first trips for Hajj 2026, connecting Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah through an integrated network of nine stations, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Known as the Holy Sites Metro, the railway is designed to handle the intense transportation demands of the Hajj season. Each train can accommodate around 3,000 passengers, while the system is capable of transporting up to 72,000 passengers per hour, placing it among the world’s highest-capacity mass transit networks.

For this year’s pilgrimage season, authorities plan to transport more than two million passengers through approximately 2,000 scheduled trips. The metro operates in coordination with security and service agencies to ensure smooth movement between the holy sites and reduce congestion.
The system is also expected to significantly ease traffic pressure by replacing more than 50,000 bus journeys during Hajj, improving overall transportation efficiency.
Earlier, Saudi Railways confirmed the metro’s readiness following extensive maintenance and preparation work on its fleet of 17 trains. Upgrades were also carried out on signaling and communication systems, stations, and the control center to enhance safety and reliability for pilgrims.
The metro line, which first entered service in 2010, remains one of the Kingdom’s key Hajj transportation projects. According to the Pilgrims Experience Program, the Holy Sites Metro has played an important role in easing congestion and improving the travel experience for pilgrims while maintaining high standards of efficiency and comfort.
