Rail services across Saudi Arabia carried more than 45 million passengers in the first quarter of 2026, highlighting the rising popularity of rail as a safe, efficient, and high-quality mode of transportation, according to the Transport General Authority (TGA).
Urban rail networks accounted for the majority of ridership, serving 42 million passengers during the quarter. The Riyadh Train led with 31 million passengers, followed by the automated people mover at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah with around 10 million users. The automated system at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University transported approximately 621,000 passengers.

For intercity travel, the Haramain High-Speed Railway, which connects Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah, carried about two million passengers during the same period.
In freight operations, railways moved over four million tons of minerals and goods. The Northern Train network handled around three million tons, while the Eastern Train network transported more than 448,000 tons and 197,000 TEUs.
