GCC : Rising Challenges Test Our Ability to Safeguard Achievements

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi said that the growing challenges facing member states are no longer temporary, but represent a real test of their ability to protect past achievements and maintain the efficiency and stability of key sectors.
His remarks came during an extraordinary virtual meeting of the GCC Ministers of Tourism, chaired by Bahrain’s Minister of Tourism, Fatima Al Sairafi, with participation from tourism ministers across the region.
At the outset, Albudaiwi stressed that the meeting comes at a critical time, noting that GCC countries are facing clear Iranian aggression. He emphasized that this escalation requires moving beyond traditional coordination toward deeper integration and more proactive responses, especially as tourism remains a cornerstone of economic sustainability in the region.
He added that GCC nations have firmly positioned themselves as leading global tourism destinations, with the sector becoming one of the fastest-growing contributors to economic diversification. However, recent developments have negatively affected tourism, disrupting travel patterns, slowing activity, and creating instability in related markets.
Albudaiwi called for stronger coordination and unified efforts to sustain growth in the tourism sector, protect its gains, and improve its resilience against future challenges.

He also highlighted 2024 data from the Gulf Statistical Center, noting that GCC countries welcomed over 72 million tourists, generating nearly $120 billion in revenue. However, due to ongoing regional tensions, tourist numbers could drop by 8 to 19 million, with potential revenue losses ranging from $13 to $32 billion.
Despite these concerns, he expressed confidence in the GCC’s ability to overcome crises, citing the strength of cooperation and integration among member states. He said this unity has consistently helped maintain stability and ensure the continued performance of vital sectors.
Albudaiwi concluded by emphasizing that the ministers’ meeting reflects a clear awareness of current challenges, as well as a shared commitment to addressing them through coordinated strategies. These include restoring tourism momentum, strengthening sustainability, aligning media messaging, and launching joint initiatives to rebuild confidence and reaffirm the GCC as a safe and attractive destination for travelers.
