A pro-Palestinian flotilla that attempted to breach Gaza’s blockade in 2025 is ramping up preparations to set sail again, organizers told AFP on Friday.
The Global Sumud Flotilla announced that its March 29 mission will be ‘the largest coordinated humanitarian intervention for Palestine in history,’ bringing together thousands of activists from more than 100 countries.
“We will be sailing from Barcelona, Tunis, Italy and many other ports not yet made public,” Brazilian activist Thiago Avila told AFP.
Notably, an overland convoy will also depart for Gaza on March 29, though the group did not specify the point of origin.
Previous Attempts
The Global Sumud Flotilla carrying pro-Palestinian activists headed towards Gaza last year amid Israel’s growing warnings.
Despites Israel’s plans to block the boats’ access to the Palestinian enclave, the organizers insisted to reach Gaza to break the naval blockade and deliver humanitarian aids to Gazans.
“We are not just delivering humanitarian aid. We are trying to deliver hope and solidarity, to send a strong message that the world stands with Palestine,” climate activist Greta Thunberg said.
The vessel’s journey across the Mediterranean has sparked international tensions, particularly after it reported drone attacks.
Meanwhile, Israel threatened that the flotilla will not pass and claimed that the flotilla will only assist Hamas.
The flotilla has accused Israel of attacking its boats. Israel’s Foreign Ministry did not respond directly to the accusation. Instead, it invited the ship to drop humanitarian aids for Israel and Israeli authorities will deliver them to Gaza, or face consequences.
Upon their arrival in the Palestinian enclave, the Israeli authorities detained the activists and put them into prisons until they were deported to their countries.
