UN Rapporteur: Israel’s Acts Reveals Its Intention to Destroy Gaza

  • The United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, said today that Israel has committed numerous acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Albanese added in her report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva that the nature and overwhelming scale of the Israeli attack on Gaza, and the devastating living conditions it caused, reveal Israel’s intention to physically destroy Palestinians as a racial group.

In the report titled “Anatomy of Genocide,” she pointed out that there are logical reasons to say that the threshold indicating that acts of genocide were committed against Palestinians in Gaza has been reached.

The rapporteur listed three types of genocide acts. First, Israel kills members of the group. Second, it causes serious harm to the physical or mental health of members of the group. Third, it deliberately subjects the group to living conditions that would lead to total or partial physical destruction.

Previously, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations has conveyed his worries about the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the conflict in Gaza. Besides, he said that famine is raging in Gaza and he called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Moreover, Martin Griffiths,  the U.N. humanitarian chief described Gaza as “uninhabitable”. According to Griffiths, famine is imminent and people are experiencing the greatest levels of food insecurity ever documented.

Besides these specific voices, the international community has been requested to take action to stop the violence in Gaza. Countries and groups advocating for dialogue to address conflict causes have intensified calls for a ceasefire. They are also calling for diplomatic endeavors to broker a durable peace agreement.

Notably, the UN Security Council adopted resolution no. 2728, which demanded a cease-fire in Gaza throughout the month of Ramadan. The United States of America abstained, and 14 nations voted in favour and 0 against. It is the first time the Security Council has called for a ceasefire since the war began.
