Syria’s Al-Sharaa to Speak at UN General Assembly in September

Syria’s Interim President, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, is set to speak at the United Nations General Assembly next month, marking the first Syrian leader to do so in decades, according to AFP.

Al-Sharaa “will take part in the United Nations General Assembly in New York where he will deliver a speech,” a foreign ministry official told AFP.

Since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, the new government has gained regional and international support.

“He will be the first Syrian president to speak at the United Nations since former president Nureddin Al-Atassi (in 1967), and the first Syrian President ever to take part in the General Assembly’s high-level week,” scheduled for September 22-30, the official added.

In April, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani addressed the United Nations for the first time and raised the new Syrian flag at the body’s New York headquarters.

Moreover, Al-Sharaa met US President Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia in May- a crucial step that eased sanctions on Syria. In the same month, he traveled to Paris and met French President Emmanuel Macron on his first trip to the West.

Macron emphasized France’s support for the construction of a new Syria as “a free, stable, sovereign Syria that respects all components of Syrian society,” according to a statement by the French Presidency.
