Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Al-Shaibani reopened the Syrian Embassy in the United Kingdom on Thursday after years of closure, according to Syrian state-owned news agency SANA.

“Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani on Thursday raised the national flag above the Syrian Embassy in London, marking the reopening of the mission after years of closure,” SANA said.

On Friday, Britain lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, following a similar step by the United Nations Security Council, according to Reuters. London also removed sanctions on Syria’s Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

“After years of isolation imposed by Al-Assad’s chemical regime, today we reopen the Syrian Embassy in London. Syria returns to the world under its free identity,” Al-Shaibani wrote in a post on X with a picture of himself on the embassy’s balcony.

In April, the British government lifted sanctions on Syria’s interior and defense ministries. Syria’s General Intelligence Directorate, Air Force Intelligence Agency and National Security Bureau were also emitted from the list of entities subject to financial sanctions by the UK.

Since the fall of Al-Assad, the country has been led by Al-Sharaa who has been attempting to warm Syria’s relations with international community after a brutal civil war that tore Syria apart.
