Spanish PM Reiterates Support for Two-State Solution in Meeting with Abbas

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Thursday urged the international community to “raise its voice” and to ensure the suffering of Palestinians is not forgotten, according to Arab News.

Sanchez’s remarks came during his meeting with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmud Abbas, held at Moncloa Palace in Madrid, Spain, on December 10.

“The year 2025 has been terrible for the Palestinian people,” the Socialist Prime Minister said.

The PM also reiterated Madrid’s unwavering support for a two-state solution, underscoring that it is “the only possible solution” to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

He added that the recent ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, brokered by the US, must be real and not “fictitious,” urging for an end to Israeli attacks on civilians.

“Genuine peace must be based on justice. Those responsible for this genocide will be held accountable, sooner or later,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abbas offered special thanks to Spain for officially recognizing the State of Palestine in May 2024 and commended Madrid’s leadership in establishing an international coalition to expand the wave of recognition.

At the same time, he called for an end to violent attacks on Gaza and the West Bank.

Sánchez has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s genocide in Gaza that continued for two years, killing more than 70,000 Palestinians.

In October 2023, Spain decided to stop selling any weapons to the Israeli occupation because of its bloody war in Gaza.

Moreover, the government pledged to stop purchasing any ammunition from Israel in 2024 due to its genocide in Gaza.
