SFDA Issues Warning: Limit Ginseng Intake to Avoid Health Risks

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has cautioned against excessive ginseng consumption, highlighting potential health risks. While ginseng offers benefits like enhanced cognitive function and increased energy, overuse can lead to adverse effects.

Potential Risks of Overuse

High doses of ginseng, scientifically known as Panax Ginseng, may lead to insomnia and high blood pressure. The SFDA emphasizes that pregnant and lactating women should avoid ginseng entirely due to insufficient safety data.

The SFDA advises a daily intake of 1–2 grams of ginseng root, taken 3–4 times daily for 3–4 weeks. Notably, one tablespoon equals 5 grams, exceeding the recommended dose.

Interactions with Medications and Foods

Ginseng may interact with blood thinners, diabetes medications, heart conditions, insomnia treatments, and antipsychotics. It also negatively interacts with caffeine-containing products like coffee, tea, guarana, and mate

The Cleveland Clinic warns users to seek immediate medical attention if they experience allergic reactions like skin rashes, itching, or swelling. Common side effects include headaches, breast pain, irregular menstrual cycles, and sleep disturbances.

The SFDA urges consumers to treat herbal supplements like medications and consult healthcare providers before use. Always verify safety claims and avoid unsubstantiated health promises.
