The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) President Dr. Abdullah Alghamdi has held a virtual meeting to review the technical and engineering readiness of SDAIA teams supporting the Ministry of Interior’s Makkah Route Initiative. Now in its eighth year, this Vision 2030 program operates across 17 entry points in 10 countries to streamline Hajj pilgrims’ arrival.
Specifically, Dr. Alghamdi evaluated digital infrastructure, integrated systems, and dedicated workstations designed to process pilgrims’ entry procedures at international terminals. Moreover, teams from each participating nation demonstrated their monitoring mechanisms and technical support protocols. Consequently, these measures ensure high-speed integration with relevant authorities to facilitate a seamless registration process.
Digital systems accelerate pilgrim processing
The initiative enables pilgrims to complete visa issuance, biometric registration, and passport clearance in their home countries before departure. Furthermore, advanced technical integration supports smart baggage coding and electronically links luggage to pilgrims’ accommodations. As a result, travelers receive direct transfer to Makkah and Madinah without collecting bags upon arrival.
Notably, the program has served 1,254,994 pilgrims since its 2017 launch. Additionally, 2022 performance data shows an average processing time of just 1 minute and 48 seconds per pilgrim, alongside a 99.45% satisfaction rate. These figures underscore the initiative’s operational excellence and pilgrim-centric design.
Dr. Alghamdi emphasized that these efforts adhere to the highest standards of efficiency and reliability, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to utilizing advanced technology to serve pilgrims. Indeed, SDAIA develops and operates the unified digital ecosystem connecting all participating entities. Therefore, the system ensures data accuracy, simplifies workflows, and enables real-time decision-making.
Collaborative framework drives continuous expansion
The Ministry of Interior leads this initiative in close collaboration with multiple government entities. Specifically, partners include the ministries of foreign affairs, health, Hajj and Umrah, and media, plus GACA, ZATCA, the Pilgrim Experience Program, and the General Directorate of Passports. Meanwhile, Stc Group serves as the strategic digital enabler for platform deployment and connectivity.
Furthermore, the initiative recently expanded to include Senegal and Brunei Darussalam, bringing the total to 10 participating countries. Consequently, more pilgrims now benefit from reduced airport queues and accelerated entry procedures. Importantly, this expansion aligns directly with Vision 2030’s Pilgrim Experience Program goals to enhance spiritual journeys through innovation.
In summary, SDAIA’s technical readiness review reinforces the Kingdom’s dedication to leveraging artificial intelligence for public service excellence. Moreover, the Makkah Route Initiative continues to set global benchmarks for digital pilgrimage management. Ultimately, these efforts ensure every pilgrim experiences dignity, efficiency, and comfort throughout their sacred journey.
