Saudi Road Code Sets Strict Distances for Roadside Parking

As Saudi Arabia makes bold strides to transforms its cities and transport infrastructure, even the smallest elements of the road environment are coming under greater focus.

The Saudi Road Code sets technical requirements for roadside parking locations, creating clearer standards for how vehicles are positioned along streets while strengthening the Kingdom’s broader push for safer, more efficient roads and promoted quality of life.

Clear Distances, Safer Intersections

Notably, the rules place particular emphasis on the space immediately around intersections.

At signalized crossings, a minimum 15-meter distance must separate the stopping zone from the first parking space.

Meanwhile, non-signalized intersections require a minimum six-meter gap before parking begins.

Pedestrian crossings are also given a clear safety buffer.

Parking must leave a safe distance around pedestrian crossings, while dividers between parallel spaces are intended to keep gaps from becoming informal traffic lanes.

How Is Saudi Arabia Standardizing Its Roads?

The parking requirements form part of a much broader framework. The Saudi Road Code serves as a unified technical reference for the authorities and entities involved in managing Saudi Arabia’s road network.

In other words, it provides guidance that includes everything from planning and design to construction, operation and maintenance.

Its framework features technical drawings, procedures, checklists and other guidance while requiring road projects to account for environmental and safety considerations throughout their lifecycle.

One Code for a More Connected Kingdom

At a broader level, the requirements mirror an ambitious vision to create a more unified road sector, driven by clear policies, transparent regulations and consistent compliance.

The Saudi Road Code sits at the heart of this approach, forming part of the mandate of the Saudi Roads General Authority (RGA) to regulate the sector and establish common standards across the Kingdom.

Being a comprehensive framework that unifies the planning and development of the Kingdom’s road network, the Saudi Road Code enhances connectivity between vital centers while improving accessibility, ensuring traffic safety, and promoting a higher quality of life.

Far more than a technical reference, the code introduces detailed guidelines covering every stage of a road’s lifecycle, from planning and design to construction, operation, and maintenance.

The code also places notable emphasis on environmental sustainability, preparing the Kingdom’s transport infrastructure to meet the demands of emerging technologies, in line with the Saudi Vision 2030.
