The Saudi Red Sea Authority won the 2024 Japan Tourism Award, presented at the “Tourism Expo Japan” held in Tokyo from September 26 to 29, under the auspices of the United Nations World Tourism Organization. The award was given for the authority’s initiative titled “Environmental Protection for Coastal Tourism.” This makes it the first tourism entity in the Middle East to win this award.
The Saudi Red Sea Authority was honored with the award in the Executive Committee category, having outperformed initiatives from various government agencies, private sectors, and non-profit organizations with a global presence in the tourism field from different countries around the world. More than 119 entities participated, highlighting the fierce competition and the international significance of the award.
Environmental Protection for Coastal Tourism
The award was granted to the organization in recognition of its pioneering initiative, which is the first of its kind in the Red Sea region, titled “Environmental Protection for Coastal Tourism.” This initiative aims to develop and implement a comprehensive mechanism to protect the marine environment for coastal tourism in the Red Sea. This will be achieved by understanding the current status of biodiversity and coastal tourism assets. It also aims to establish effective governance that enhances the sustainability of the coastal marine environment.
The judging panel of the award described the Authority’s project as one of excellence and leadership, emphasizing that it clearly focuses on sustainable development goals by balancing the protection of the local natural ecosystem with promoting tourism and attracting visitors.
Japan Tourism Award
The award offers several benefits to the winners, most notably the provision of certificates of appreciation and recognition for the winning initiatives, which will be showcased at the Tourism Expo Japan 2024. Additionally, the award-winning initiatives will be widely disseminated worldwide in collaboration with the Japanese Tourism Expo as exemplary case studies to contribute to the future development of tourism.
Finally, the Japan Tourism Award is one of the prestigious international awards granted to leading organizations that meet the well-being of communities and stimulate sustainable economic growth. The award enjoys global recognition and is held in conjunction with the Tourism Expo Japan, attracting a large international audience.
