Saudi Aramco, Pasqal Launch Kingdom’s First Quantum Computer

Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals companies, has partnered with Pasqal, a global pioneer in neutral-atom quantum computing, to deploy the first quantum computer in the Kingdom—and the Middle East’s first system dedicated to industrial applications.

In a recent press release, Aramco announced that Pasqal’s neutral-atom quantum computer is now operating at the company’s Dhahran data center, marking a significant step in building regional expertise and accelerating the development of quantum technologies for the energy, materials, and industrial sectors across the Kingdom and the wider Middle East.

The achievement supports Aramco’s strategy to harness advanced digital technologies to enhance efficiency, drive innovation, and create long-term value. It also aligns with Pasqal’s mission to deliver practical quantum solutions to key industries worldwide.

Ahmad Al-Khowaiter, Aramco’s Executive Vice President of Technology and Innovation, emphasized that Aramco continues to lead in technological innovation, deploying artificial intelligence and advanced digital tools at scale to optimize operations and unlock additional value. Additionally, he said the partnership with Pasqal is a natural next step in exploring the potential of quantum computing.

Pasqal CEO Loïc Henriet described the collaboration as a historic milestone for the region. He  also noted that deploying the company’s most powerful quantum computer to date marks a defining moment for the future of quantum technologies in the Middle East, and reflects Pasqal’s commitment to providing practical, industry-focused quantum capabilities.

The announcement also highlighted the role of Wa’ed Ventures, Aramco’s venture capital arm, which became one of Pasqal’s earliest strategic investors in January 2023. Since then, Wa’ed Ventures has supported Pasqal’s efforts to localize its technologies in the Kingdom, helping establish a strong foundation for a regional quantum ecosystem.

Saudi Aramco makes an eye-popping $160bn in profit

Pasqal’s system at the Dhahran data center features 200 qubits arranged in programmable two-dimensional arrays, offering a powerful platform for developing advanced quantum algorithms and real-world industrial applications.

As part of the partnership, Pasqal will also provide training programs and joint research opportunities for Saudi engineers and scientists, contributing to the growth of the Kingdom’s quantum ecosystem and the development of highly skilled technical talent.
