Saudi Arabia’s Green Hydrogen to Reach Europe through Germany’s SEFE

Saudi Arabia and Germany have bolstered their cooperation in the field of green hydrogen and green ammonia production by signing a new agreement that will deliver the Kingdom’s exports to Europe.

On Sunday, the Saudi Energy Minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, met with Germany’s Finance Minister, Jörg Kukies, in Riyadh, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

During their meeting, they discussed topics of mutual interest in the energy sector, as well as the two countries’ efforts in the field of green hydrogen, in the light of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) the two countries signed in 2021.

Following the meeting, both ministers witnessed the signing of an MoU to launch the Saudi-German Green Hydrogen Bridge between Saudi ACWA Power and German SEFE. The MoU aims to produce and export green hydrogen and green ammonia from Saudi Arabia to Europe.

Under the MoU, ACWA Power and SEFE will work on joint projects, with an initial target of exporting 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually from the Kingdom to Europe by 2030.

Moreover, ACWA Power will act as the developer, investor and main operator of green hydrogen and green ammonia production assets. Meanwhile, SEFE, one of the largest energy trading companies in Europe, will act as co-investor and key offtaker to market green hydrogen to the company’s customers in Germany and Europe.

This move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s efforts to establish its position as one of the leading countries in green hydrogen production and export. It also aligns with the objectives of the MoU signed between the Kingdom and Germany under the framework of the Saudi-German Energy Dialogue, which aims to foster collaboration in renewable energy and clean technologies.
