Saudi Arabia renews commitment to face Houthis in Yemen

Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz said on Monday that the Kingdom is “committed to supporting the Yemeni government and people in confronting the Iranian-backed Houthi group, and pushing efforts to reach a political solution based on the three references that preserve the security of the region.”

He added, during a meeting he held with Yemeni Prime Minister Maeen Abdul-Malik in the capital, Riyadh, that the Kingdom “monitors the difficult economic situation of the Yemeni people, and welcomes the recent decisions taken by the Yemeni government in the Central Bank “.

He pointed out that continuing the steps of economic reform will contribute to “increasing economic support from the Kingdom and the international community, by encouraging other donors to participate in supporting the Yemeni government,” according to the Saudi Press Agency, “SPA”.

During the meeting, the two sides also reviewed “the Kingdom’s efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving security, stability, and peace for Yemen, in addition to several issues and files of common interest.”

The three references are Security Council Resolution No. 2216, the Gulf Initiative, and the outcomes of the National Dialogue.

In turn, the Yemeni Prime Minister valued Saudi Arabia’s continued support in all fields, and stressed that support for the Central Bank “had a significant impact on the stability of the Yemeni currency, the economic situation, and the availability of foodstuffs.”

He pointed out that “the oil derivatives grant contributed to the sustainability of providing electricity and easing the financial burdens on the Yemeni government,”.

He noted that the Yemeni government “relies on the support of the Kingdom and donors in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries or the international community and that this will contribute to improving the economic situation and alleviating suffering.”
