The Vox Cinema Red Sea in Jeddah is currently hosting the “Chinese Film Nights” festival, boosting the Saudi-Chinese cultural ties, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The festival represents a significant collaboration between the Chinese Consulate and the National Film Authority of China.
The three-day event started on Friday showcasing six movies, two each night.
The opening gala has highlighted the attendance of several Saudi and Chinese officials.
As part of the “Saudi Film Nights”, various Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou screened multiple long and short Saudi films in October.
In addition, the Saudi Film Commission has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the pioneering Chinese Film producer and distributor Bona Film Group, during a visit by the Saudi Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah to China.
According to the agreement, both sides will cooperate in film distributions including Saudi movies in both the Kingdom and China.
Moreover, the provisions of the memorandum include training, skill development and negotiations on launching a joint film production fund.
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has made bold strides in boosting the entertainment industry in line with the ambitious goals of the Saudi Vision 2030 to diversify the Kingdom’s economy and cut oil dependency.
In 2018, the Kingdom reopened cinemas for the first time in approximately four decades.
Consequently, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the Kingdom in December 2022 and met King Salman and his Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
