Saudi Arabia, Egypt Forge Stronger Ties with New Joint Coordination Council

Riyadh and Cairo are establishing the Saudi-Egyptian Higher Coordination Council, as announced by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. This initiative aims to enhance political, economic, and developmental ties between the two nations, reflecting their shared vision for regional stability and growth.

A Framework for Future Collaboration

In a televised statement, Abdelatty emphasized the council’s role in fostering a “strong strategic partnership and continuous cooperation.” The council, co-chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, will focus on investment, trade, and development.

The agreement to establish the council was signed in October 2024 during Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Cairo. Egypt formally approved the council in November, highlighting its commitment to deepening bilateral relations16.

Experts Highlight Council’s Strategic Importance

Saudi journalist Khaled Al-Majrashi described the council as a pivotal step toward Saudi-Egyptian integration. He noted its focus on investment and trade, aligning with directives from both nations’ leaderships. Former Egyptian Deputy Foreign Minister Rakha Ahmed Hassan added that the council will remove obstacles to cooperation and strengthen ties across all sectors.

Egyptian Senator Dr. Abdel Monem Said emphasized the council’s role in addressing regional challenges. He stated, “No Arab country can face regional instability alone,” underscoring the need for joint efforts to tackle shared threats.

The council will include ministers and officials from both countries, holding regular meetings alternately in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. It replaces the previous joint committee framework, offering a more comprehensive approach to bilateral collaboration.

In September 2024, Abdelatty and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan highlighted the council’s potential to deepen ties in politics, trade, investment, and development. This aligns with both nations’ goals of fostering economic growth and regional stability.
