Saudi Arabia issued a stern condemnation on Tuesday following an overnight Iranian drone attack targeting the United States Embassy, as Tehran continues its retaliation campaign across the Gulf region following recent US and Israeli strikes.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed “its strongest condemnation and rejection of the heinous attack that targeted the US Embassy building.” Officials described the strike as “cowardly and unjustified” while noting the incident caused a limited fire and minor damage. Defense Ministry spokesman Turki al-Malki confirmed that Iran struck the diplomatic compound in the capital with two drones early Tuesday.
The Ministry emphasized that this behavior blatantly violates international norms, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and 1961 Vienna Conventions. These laws specifically grant immunity to diplomatic premises and personnel, yet Tehran ignored these global standards during its strike.
Escalation Despite Assurances
The Kingdom expressed particular frustration because it had previously assured Tehran it would not allow any use of its territory. “The Kingdom emphasizes that the repetition of this flagrant Iranian behaviour, which comes despite the Iranian authorities’ knowledge that the Kingdom has affirmed it will not allow its airspace or territory to be used to target Iran, will push the region toward further escalation,” the statement read.
Despite these clear diplomatic assurances, Iran acted blatantly, threatening the stability of the entire Middle East with its campaign. Consequently, Riyadh warned that such repetitive aggression forces the region into a dangerous cycle of military and political escalation.
Saudi Arabia remains committed to its sovereignty and the safety of everyone living within its borders during this crisis. The Kingdom “reiterates its full right to take all necessary measures to protect its security, territorial integrity, citizens, residents, and vital interests, including the option of responding to the aggression.”
Furthermore, the government reaffirmed its right to defend vital interests against any external threats that undermine regional peace and security. Leaders stressed they reserve the right to respond to this aggression using any measures they deem necessary and appropriate.
