Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, reaffirmed the Kingdom’s steadfast support for Sudan’s stability during a Human Rights Council address. He emphasized Saudi Arabia’s dedication to ending the crisis through dialogue, urging warring factions to prioritize civilian safety and institutional preservation.
Jeddah Talks: Cornerstone of Regional Diplomacy
Ambassador Khothaila highlighted the Jeddah-mediated negotiations, co-led with the U.S., as pivotal for fostering ceasefire agreements and political reconciliation. These talks, initiated in May 2023, aimed to curb violence affecting over 6 million displaced civilians and 13,000 casualties. Despite temporary truce setbacks, Saudi Arabia continues advocating for renewed dialogue frameworks involving regional partners like the African Union and IGAD.
The ambassador stressed the urgent need for scalable aid delivery, citing Saudi Arabia’s $100 million humanitarian contribution through KSrelief. This funding supports food, medical supplies, and evacuation efforts for 8,000+ individuals from 110 nations. Khothaila warned that delayed action risks exacerbating famine threats for 25 million Sudanese facing acute food insecurity.
Collaborative Pathways to Sustainable Peace
Saudi Arabia urged global stakeholders to unite behind conflict de-escalation measures and inclusive governance models. Khothaila reiterated that lasting peace requires empowering Sudanese-led initiatives, safeguarding economic infrastructure, and countering external interference. The Kingdom also endorsed UN appeals for $2.7 billion in emergency funding to address Sudan’s worsening crisis.
Concluding his address, Khothaila linked Sudan’s recovery to regional security, affirming Saudi Arabia’s role as a mediator committed to Arab unity. He called for leveraging international platforms to amplify Sudanese voices, ensuring their aspirations shape the nation’s democratic transition.
