Saudi Arabia Among G20’s Top 10 for Cancer Survival Rates

In recognition of World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, the Saudi Health Council highlighted its leading initiatives to advance and regulate cancer care services across the Kingdom.

The council has issued several pivotal decisions aimed at strengthening national cancer control efforts. These include the establishment of the National Cancer Center under the council’s supervision, the development of quality standards and evaluation mechanisms for oncology services, centers, and departments, and the introduction of a dedicated fast-track pathway for admitting acute leukemia patients across all government healthcare sectors.

On the international front, the council’s efforts include Saudi Arabia’s membership in the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization, as well as participation in the global CONCORD Programme, which tracks cancer survival rates worldwide.

The council has published 27 national reports on cancer incidence, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s ranking among the top 10 G20 countries in survival rates for the most common cancers. Survival rates reached 76% for breast cancer, 82% for prostate cancer, and 61% for colorectal cancer. Moreover, these outcomes reflect the high quality and efficiency of cancer care services in the Kingdom, alongside the cancer registry’s critical role in monitoring and analyzing national data.

The National Cancer Center aims to develop comprehensive national strategies for cancer prevention and control, monitor disease trends. This also enhances the quality of integrated care services, track treatment outcomes, support research and innovation, and strengthen coordination among healthcare sectors and relevant stakeholders involved in cancer care.
