Chinese President Xi Jinping held remarkable talks with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko in Beijing on Monday, amid China’s push to boost ties with one of Russia’s closest allies, according to Reuters.
Lukashenko, who has been in office since 1994, allowed Russian authorities to launch its 2022 invasion of Ukraine from Belarusian territory. However, the Belarusian leader admitted that his country had no plans to take part in the conflict.
Crucially, Belarus, which shares borders with NATO member states, hosts Russia’s newest nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile system.
Despite the fact that China has consistently claimed neutrality in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Kyiv’s allies have repeatedly accused Beijing of secretly supporting Moscow.
Lukashenko’s last visit to China came in September 2025, when he attended a military parade in Beijing followed by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin.
