The 35th session of the Council of Arab Environment Ministers has named Riyadh as the Arab Environment Capital for two years, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The announcement came during the session, organized by the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in collaboration with the Arab League, in recognition of Riyadh’s leading efforts in preserving the environment and promoting sustainability.
The 35th session of the Council of Arab Environment Ministers, held from October 13-17, 2024 in Jeddah, has seen the attendance of several Arab Ministers and representatives of regional and international organizations.
Moreover, the session has awarded the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) the Distinguished Environmental Project Award at the government sector level, underscoring Saudi Arabia’s pioneering role in adopting strategic visions and innovative and sustainable environmental projects.
Over the course of 2024, Riyadh will host a series of significant environmental events, most notably the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16).
The Conference will discuss a wide range of key topics, including advancing the convention, overseeing the implementation of the UNCCD 2018-2030 Strategic Framework, and addressing drought and dust storms.
Furthermore, the representatives of UNCCD’s 196 parties, as well as regional and international organizations, will take part in the COP16 to tackle challenges related to desertification and drought and explore ways to address them.
Recognized as the Arab Environment Capital for two years, Riyadh will host a number of events and activities that aim to enhance environmental awareness and support sustainability, in addition to organizing campaigns and initiatives designed to improve the quality of life and environment in the region.
These events will strengthen Riyadh’s position as a global hub for environmental action and sustainable development, in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
