Preview: Saudi New Football Season Ignites with 2024 Saudi Super Cup

The Saudi Super Cup, the traditional curtain-raiser for Saudi Arabian football, is set to launch the 2024-25 season this week. The opening weekend promises high-intensity football as the first matches of the new season kick off in Abha.

For the first time, the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium in the scenic city of Abha will host the top four teams from Saudi Arabian football’s historic 2023-24 season. These teams—Al Nassr, Al Ahli, Al Taawoun, and domestic treble-winners Al Hilal—will compete for the season’s first honors.

Al Hilal’s Quest for Continued Dominance

Al Hilal, fresh from their record fourth Super Cup win in April, will begin their campaign against Al Ahli on August 13. As domestic treble-winners, Al Hilal aims to maintain their flawless form from last season, where they secured their 19th league title under Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus. Star players like Ruben Neves, Aleksandr Mitrovic, Sergej Milinković-Savić, and Neymar are set to feature in this season-opening competition.

Al Ahli’s Return and Strong Ambitions

Al Ahli, returning for their second top-flight season, will provide a tough challenge for the reigning champions. The Jeddah team, with international stars Edouard Mendy, Riyad Mahrez, and Roberto Firmino, aims to secure their first Super Cup victory since 2016. Their match against Al Hilal will set the tone for an exciting season ahead.

Al Nassr’s Redemption and New Signings

Al Nassr, led by Portuguese superstar Ronaldo, seeks redemption after a penalty shootout loss in the King’s Cup final. With new signing Brazilian goalkeeper Bento, Al Nassr will look to add to their two previous Super Cup successes. They face Al Taawoun on August 14 in Abha.

Al Taawoun’s Surprise Factor

Al Taawoun, the surprise of the 2023-24 season, will aim to replicate their fine form, which saw them finish fourth in the top flight. New manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena will lead the Buraydah outfit and hopes to bring an early shock to the new season.

The Saudi Super Cup is part of a historic new season of domestic football in Saudi Arabia. It is the first tournament since the Kingdom’s official bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2034.
