John Magufuli, President of Tanzania died at the age of 61 on Wednesday. The country’s Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan broke the news in a state announcement.
Magufuli, suffering from heart complications, died at a hospital in Dar es Salaam – Samia Suluhu Hassan said in the address.
“It is with deep regret that I inform you that today… we lost our brave leader, the president of the Republic of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli,” said the Vice President.
She said there would be 14 days of national mourning on account of his death.
As per the constitution, Ms Hassan will be sworn in as the new president and should serve the remainder of Magufuli’s tenure.
The President had not been seen in public for more than two weeks, and if the opposition is to be believed, he had contracted Covid-19. Rumors about his health had been doing the rounds for a while.
