Pentagon to Deploy More Troops to Middle East Amid Ongoing Conflict: Reuters

The Pentagon is planning to dispatch thousands of soldiers from the Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, two anonymous sources told Reuters on Tuesday. This deployment expands America’s military footprint while President Donald Trump discusses potential negotiations with Tehran to end the ongoing war.

Reuters first reported 18 March that Trump’s administration considered deploying additional troops, potentially expanding options to include forces inside Iranian territory. Such escalation could dramatically raise stakes in the conflict, which now enters its fourth week and continues roiling global markets significantly.

Deployment Details Remain Unclear

Officials speaking anonymously did not specify where troops would go or when they would arrive in the region. The soldiers currently remain stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, awaiting their deployment orders from military commanders. The US military referred questions to the White House, which said all announcements on troop deployments would come from the Pentagon directly.

“As we have said, President Trump always has all military options at his disposal,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said.

Officials have not decided yet to send troops into Iran itself, one source told Reuters, but they will build capacity for potential future operations in the region strategically.

Previous Reinforcements and Current Situation

One source said the Pentagon will send between 3,000 and 4,000 soldiers to strengthen regional presence. This deployment follows Reuters’ 20 March report about sending thousands of Marines and sailors aboard the USS Boxer amphibious assault ship.

Prior to additional forces arriving, there were 50,000 US troops already positioned throughout the Middle East region. News of reinforcements comes just one day after Trump postponed threats to bomb Iranian power plants, citing “productive” talks with Iran.

But after Trump’s Truth Social comment Monday, Iran denied that it had held any talks with the US officially.

The US has carried out strikes against 9,000 targets inside Iran since military operations started on February 28. Thirteen US troops died so far in the war and 290 suffered wounds, a US official said. Any use of US ground troops could pose significant political risks for Trump, given low American public support for the Iran campaign.
