Paris to Host Global Summit on Nuclear Power Amid Mideast Tensions

Paris will host a significant summit on Tuesday, designed to accelerate the adoption of civilian nuclear energy amid the current US–Israeli conflict with Iran, according to Arab News.

Set to be inaugurated by French President Emmanuel Macron, the conference will bring together representatives from approximately 40 countries and international organizations.

The summit will see the participation of the United States and China, while Russia, another key nuclear energy player, will be absent due to its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

The Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011 plunged nuclear energy into renewed scrutiny, reviving the concerns first sparked by the Chernobyl accident of 1986.

Currently, nuclear power generates approximately 9% of the world’s electricity, with around 440 reactors operating across approximately 30 countries.

The United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), co-hosting the summit alongside the International Energy Agency (IEA), has anticipated that nuclear power generation could potentially double by 2050.

The agency also stated that China is constructing 29 new reactors, adding to the 57 already in operation.

Moreover, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi underscored that roughly 40 countries have either begun constructing reactors or expressed interest in building nuclear power programs.
