OMER FARUK GERGERLIOGLU STRIPPED OF MP STATUS; COURT UPHOLDS SENTENCE

On Wednesday, Turkey’s parliament stripped lawmaker and activist, Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu’s status as a parliamentarian after the Court of Appeal upheld a two-and-a-half year prison sentence.

He is a deputy in the People’s Democratic Party (HDP), which the government accuses of having links with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

Upheld last month, the charges of conviction are “making terrorist propaganda.” In 2016, he had retweeted a T24 news story about the Kurdish conflict and the collapse of the peace process.
