Official Visit: UK’s Starmer to Discuss Pending Sale of Eurofighter Jets in Turkey

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to visit Ankara on Monday for talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan around the pending sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets, according to Reuters.

The visit marks Starmer’s first visit to Ankara since taking office in 2024.

It also signals the increasing defense cooperation between NATO allies, as Ankara aims to boost its air capabilities and narrow the gap with regional powers such as Israel.

Turkey previously introduced proposals to its European partners and the United States highlighting swift pathways to procure advanced fighter aircraft. These suggestions are part of ongoing talks to purchase 40 Eurofighter Typhoons, in addition to US-made F-16s and F-35s, according to Reuters.

A person familiar with the matter said that Ankara will receive 12 used Eurofighter Typhoon jets from previous buyers Qatar and Oman to meet its immediate defense requirements under a near-finalized deal with Britain.

The deal also features the delivery of 28 newly manufactured aircraft in the coming years.

In July, both Turkey and the UK signed a preliminary deal for the purchase, which obtained approval from the Eurofighter consortium members Britain, Germany, Italy, and Spain — represented by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo.
