The Saudi Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued a stark warning about the alarming rate of late-stage breast cancer diagnoses in the country. According to the ministry, a staggering 55% of breast cancer cases are detected at advanced stages, significantly reducing the chances of recovery. The ministry underscored the importance of early screening to enhance survival rates and improve the quality of life for patients.
Early Detection Crucial for Survival
However, the ministry emphasized that early screening is crucial for preventing breast cancer and increasing survival rates. While 80% of breast tumors are found to be benign, early detection is key to ensuring successful treatment.
Health officials stressed that early diagnosis can lead to a recovery rate exceeding 95%. Timely treatment not only improves quality of life but also helps to lower mortality rates among breast cancer patients.
Campaigns Promote Awareness
To encourage early screening, the ministry has launched several awareness campaigns. These initiatives target women over 40 who have not undergone a screening in the past two years. The ministry also collaborates with government and private organizations to fight breast cancer together.
Recent efforts include the “Your Flag is Pink” campaign by Najran Health Cluster and the “Be Optimistic and Get Tested Now” initiative in Al-Ahsa, led by Governor Prince Saud bin Badr, as well as “Your Banner is Pink” campaign, led by Prince Saud bin Nahar, Governor of Taif. Those campaigns aim to educate women on early detection during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Prevention Recommendations
To mitigate the risk of developing breast cancer, the ministry recommends a wide range of preventive measures. These include adhering to a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and breastfeeding.
Women are also advised to avoid the long-term use of birth control pills without consulting medical professionals. The ministry also recommends abstaining from tobacco and ensuring hormone therapy is supervised by medical guidance.
Global and Local Efforts
The Ministry of Health reiterates that breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women worldwide and in Saudi Arabia. Regular screenings are essential for catching the disease early and improving recovery outcomes. The ministry continues to support awareness initiatives as part of the Pink October events, promoting prevention and the latest treatment methods available.
