Minister of Energy Honors Mawhiba Students for Energy Hackathon Competitions

Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Minister of Energy, honored the winning teams in the Energy Hackathon, in the presence of Dr. Khalid Al-Sharif, Acting Secretary-General of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba). The hackathon was organized as part of the 12th edition of the Smart Grids Conference held in Riyadh under the theme “Energy and Sustainability,” under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy.

Mawhiba Classes in Hackathon

Three student teams from the “Mawhiba Classes” program topped the list of first-place winners in the hackathon, which was organized in cooperation with the Mawhiba Foundation.

Sixty talented students from the “Mawhiba Classes” program participated in the Energy Hackathon. These students, selected from high schools in Riyadh, were divided into 12 teams competing across three tracks. The hackathon aimed to develop innovative solutions and creative ideas for advanced technologies to enhance the energy sector’s capabilities and empower it to overcome current and future challenges.

First Track

The first track of the hackathon focused on energy sustainability and its challenges. Additionally, this included developing solar energy technologies tailored to improve daily life quality, designing solar-powered devices that provide effective solutions for beneficiaries in remote areas, and creating waste-to-energy solutions using new technologies, such as biogas and pyrolysis, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Second Track

The second track includes improving the energy efficiency of electric vehicles in the Kingdom by developing innovative solutions to facilitate the use of these vehicles, such as charging stations and efficiency enhancement technologies. It also involves projects for developing the infrastructure of charging stations, improving battery efficiency, and raising awareness of the environmental impact of using electric vehicles.

Third Track

The third track of the hackathon focused on innovation in energy storage by developing solutions that transform electricity into a digital currency that can be traded. These solutions enable customers to store their surplus production or sell it, contributing to the creation of a digital electricity economy that drives investment in renewable energy solutions.

It is worth noting that the Smart Grids Conference, within whose preparatory activities the hackathon took place, explores the key challenges of integrating renewable energy sources into the electrical grid. Moreover, the standards for designing and operating grids, energy efficiency solutions, and the latest technologies in energy storage.
